Christmas Social 2019

16 members enjoyed a festive Christmas dinner at the Riverside Restaurant in Woodbridge. As usual, the evening included a Christmas card competition, which, as usual, was won by Robin Garrod! Robin's card was selected by restaurant owner Stuart Saunders, who particularly liked the brussels sprouts featured in the design, and Robin was presented with a film and dinner voucher kindly donated by Stuart. Second place went to Andrew Nunn, whose card did not include any sprouts! Posted 19/12/2019

Book Titles competition - 19 November 2019

Sue does it again! Yet again, Sue Garrod trounced all rivals to win our BookTitles competition with her image "Arachnophobia" (see below). Judge Mike Cowling ARPS had the daunting task of working his way through a record 73 entries, but did an excellent job of scoring the images and giving helpful comments on their photographic qualities and how well they fitted the book titles they each represented. Our thanks to him for that.

Mike also awarded a maximum of 20 points to five other images: "Alice Through the Looking Glass" by Sue Garrod (again!), "Gathering Prey" by Ann Stammers, "Great Expectations" by Robin Garrod, "The House on the Loch" by Julie Caton and "The Shape of Water" by Richard Brown.

Plans are afoot to nobble Sue's entries for our next competition!

Tripod Competition - 1 November 2019

This year's Tripod Competition, hosted by Wickham Market Club, was well attended by members from all three clubs taking part. Judge Peter Norris did a good job, awarding scores to prints and PDIs from each club and giving helpful comments on all the images. We achieved good scores in the PDIs, beating both of the other clubs, but unfortunately did less well well in the prints and were beaten into second place overall by Framlingham.

However, congratulations to Kirsteen Crossan for winning the shield for the best individual PDI with her image "Woman's Best Friend".

The final scores were Framlinham 273, Woodbridge 268, Wickham Market 256.

Thanks to Wickham Market Camera Club for hosting the event and providing us with tea and coffee and a buffet. Posted  03/11/2019

2019 Annual Exhibition

This year's annual exhibition, held again at the Longshed at Whisstocks, attracted a total of 536 visitors over the 3 days, who were able to see work by our members, including 74 prints and a rolling display of 60 projected digital images. We are grateful to everyone who came along and for their positive comments in our visitors' book.

At a members' presentation evening our guest Alan Sarsby was set the difficult task of selecting the best images. Alan is well-known to us for the informative and amusing workshops he has presented at club meetings, and his presentation of the winners was equally entertaining. In the print section the winner was Ron Maxfield with his image "A Heart of Stone", second was Sue Garrod with "Brian's Looking for Florence" and third was Ann Nunn with "Dead Bug". The winner of the PDIs was Kirsteen Crossan with "Woman's Best Friend", second was Sue Garrod with "Pinney's Smoked Mackerel Delights" and third, Sarah Bynom with "Bleak House". Alan also selected a number of prints and PDIs as highly commended. Click here to see all the winning and commended images.

Also on display were a number of boards put together by members in response to a "Scavenger Hunt" challenge They were given 6 subjects to find and photograph, and mount together on a single board as a collection, and visitors were invited to vote for their favourite collection. The winner of this "peoples' vote" was Steve Stammers.

Our thanks go to Alan Sarsby for taking on the unenviable task of judging the images, and also to all of our members who contributed to the success of the event by providing their images, and by stewarding and helping to set up and take down the exhibition.

Close-up practical evening

At our meeting last Tuesday members had the opportunity to try their hand at shooting close-up images, using a variety of subjects and lighting setups. This was a fun evening, enjoyed by all, with many members learning techniques they had never used before. Thanks to all those who provided and setup the various shooting areas and lighting around the room. Posted 26/04/2019

Thinking in colour to see in black and white

At our March club meeting we had a workshop led by Alan Sarsby "Thinking in colour to see in black and white".

Alan gave a well-attended meeting a presentation on the theory of black and white photography, which was followed by an interactive workshop, with members split into groups to assess a range of images for their suitability for conversion to black and white. This proved to be a very instructive excercise and everyone came away with a better insight into how to produce great black and white images, which we hope will be reflected in the quality of entries for our "Monochrome" PDI competitrion in May. Posted 12/04/2019

Food & Drink competition - 19 February 2019

Our Food & Drink print competition was won by Graham Wood with his photo "Cheese and Wine by Candlelight", which was chosen by judge George Buxton from a selection of mouth-watering (mostly) images. Four other entries also received the maximum 10 points: "Ice & Lemon Please" also by Graham Wood, "Mussels on the Menu" by Robin Garrod, "Pinney's Smoked Mackerel Delights" by Sue Garrod and "Stirred not Shaken!" by Gaye Wightman.
