Christmas Social 2018

The club's Christmas social evening this year was held at the Riverside Restaurant in Woodbridge. As in previous years, the evening included a Christmas card competition, which was judged by the restaurant owner, Stuart Saunders, and the winner was Robin Garrod, who was presented with a film and dinner voucher kindly donated by Stuart. Second prize went to Graham Wood. In this photograph, Stuart is presenting Robin with his prize. Posted 22/12/2018

Perspective competition - 20 November 2018

We had a fantastic response from members for our "Perspective" PDI competition with a total of 63 entries. Judge John Wrigley awarded the maximum 10 points to four of the images, but when pressed to select a winner he singled out "Reflection of St Pauls" by Graham Wood for being an original idea, well executed. Congratulations to Graham and thanks to John for judging and to all members who submitted entries. Click here to see all images. Posted 21/11/2018

Tripod Competition - 16 October 2018

Unfortunately, Wickham Market Club had to withdraw from this year's Tripod competition, so it became a Bipod competition, with just Framlingham Camera Club and Woodbridge taking part. The event was very well attended by members of both clubs and judge Frank Blyth did an excellent job, awarding scores to prints and PDIs from each club, accompanied by helpful comments. We managed to beat Framlingham by a small margin in the PDI section, but their commanding lead in the prints assured them of victory by 144.5 points to 138.

During the break members of both clubs were able to chat over tea/coffee and food provided by our members, and a raffle raised money for club funds.

Thanks to members of both clubs for taking part, and in particular to Frank Blyth for judging the competition so ably. Posted 17/10/2018

2018 Annual Exhibition

Our annual exhibition this year was held in the Longshed, part of the new Whisstocks development on Woodbridge waterfront. This proved to be our most successful exhibition yet, with over 550 visitors over the 3 days, and our thanks go to the Woodbridge Riverside Trust for allowing us to use this excellent venue.

We had 55 prints on display, and the space available in the Longshed also allowed us to include 56 PDIs, shown as a continuously running slideshow, for the first time. We are grateful to everyone who came along, and for their positive comments on the standard of the images on display.

We must also thank the Mayor of Woodbridge, Councillor David Mortimer, for opening the exhibition and for taking on the unenviable task of selecting the best images. Winner of the print section was Steve Stammers with his image "Food, Glorious Food", with Daryl Butcher in second place with "Reflections", Richard Brown in third with "The Essence of Life", and Gaye Wightman commended with "Autumn Colours".

In the PDI section, first place went to Sue Garrod with "Stormy Skies over Sizewell", second to Barrie Henderson for "The Tower at Tower Bridge", third to Sue Garrod for "The Last Coypu Catcher" and commended to Charmian Berry for "Peregrine Falcon".

Orford Photoshoot - 15 May 2018

On 15 May members invaded Orford for an evening photoshoot. The weather favoured us and we all went our own ways to capture images of different subjects around the town during the "golden hour" before sunset, and congregated afterwards at the Jolly Sailor for a drink and meal, and to share stories about what we found to photograph. The image below is a composite of photos by Robin Garrod, which he's called "A Postcard from Orford". All the other images captured by members can be seen herePosted 22/05/2018

Encouraging a Photographic Eye by Alan Sarsby

This month's meeting featured an interactive presentation by Alan Sarsby, and the Quay Church Hall was very full with 22 members and 5 guests.

After an introduction and an insight into judging and marking competition images, Alan gave 5 groups of members the same selection of our own images to critique. With only 1 minute per image, after 25 images the pace was showing. He then discussed our images, what to do to improve or what to keep doing well. Very hard work and rewarding for all members attending.

A worthwhile and enjoyable evening, and members look forward to welcoming Alan back next year for a new workshop challenge. Posted 21/03/2018

Robin Garrod elected new Club Chairman

At our AGM on Tuesday, Robin Garrod was elected as Chairman.

In his acceptance speech Robin asked members to show their appreciation to Steve Mecrow for his work as Chairman over the past 2 years. He also referred to his own Visual Disability with Retinitis Pigmentosa, which severely restricts his peripheral vision. It is a tribute to Robin that despite his disability, he is able to produce competition-winning photographs.

Robin wishes to encourage members to work positively with him, moving the club forward with enthusiasm and vision. Posted 21/09/2017

East of England Co-op Token Scheme

A big thank you to the East of England Co-op and everyone who put their green tokens in our box at the local stores, which resulted in the Co-op donating £200 to the club's funds. Posted 19/07/2017

East of England Coop Token Scheme

We are pleased to say that our application to take part in the East of England Coop's Community Token Scheme has been successful, and from 1 April to the end of June one of the collection boxes at 4 local branches of the supermarket will be for Woodbridge Camera Club. Shoppers will be given a token at the checkout that they can put in the collection box of their choice and at the end of the period the Coop will donate a share of £1,000 to the club, based on the number of tokens collected in our box. The 4 stores participating are Woodbridge, Wickham Market, Hasketon Road and Old Barrack Road, so when you visit one of these be sure to collect your token and put it in our box. Posted 08/04/2017

Whisstocks Project Update

Regretfully, our original plan to document the transformation of the former Whisstocks boatyard site to a mixed-use waterfront centre with new Town Museum and community boatshed never got under way, but now that the development is nearing completion, the club’s interest in the project is being redirected towards the two community projects: namely the Town Museum and Longshed.

The Longshed will be the site of the Woodbridge Riverside Trust’s core project, which is to construct a full-size replica of the Anglo Saxon Sutton Hoo burial ship. A half-size replica, Sae Wylfing has already been constructed and has been sailed on the River Deben. A group of members will be liaising with the WRT to explore the photographic opportunities of this project and to document its progress.

Composition Beyond the Thirds by Alan Sarsby

At our meeting on 21 March, members enjoyed a great presentation by Alan Sarsby entitled "Composition Beyond the Thirds". After explaining some of the most important rules of composition (of which he told us there are more than 100), Alan handed out a selection of images and asked us to identify the compositional devices we could find in each, which was very enlightening. Posted 24/03/2017
